What training does the program provide the residents?

Summa Emergency Medicine Residency is a fully accredited ACGME residency restored in 2020. Residents train primarily at a tertiary Level 1 Trauma Center, Certified Chest Pain and Stroke Center and rotate through a community hospital, a FSED, and a tertiary children’s hospital giving residents a true breadth of practice environments.

Residents choose a focus track in their second year of residency including ultrasound, addiction medicine, global health, administration, medical education, research, and advocacy. Elective courses are individually catered to each resident’s interest but have included life flight medicine, wilderness medicine, sports medicine, addiction, critical care – options are limitless!

 

What do residents love about the program? 

  • Our faculty are the perfect blend of experienced and prestigious EM educators and younger faculty that bring in their variety of passions and excitement for evidence-based medicine. The diversity of teaching styles, patient backgrounds and pathology make our program the ideal place to train.
  • We enjoy monthly journal clubs at local restaurants and faculty homes, fun wellness events (trivia night, bike & brew, etc.) and our annual Christmas party hosted by the chair.
  • Akron, OH is conveniently located 40 minutes south of Cleveland, a 2-hour drive from Columbus and Pittsburgh, PA and minutes from nature hikes, lakes, wineries, local breweries, sporting and music events, ski slopes and a national park!

Describe your faculty.

USACS is well-represented at Summa! In addition to Dr. David Seaberg, who is the Executive Vice President of Academic Medicine at USACS and chair of our department, our residents have the prestige to train under some of the most accomplished EM physicians in the nation, including USACS Vice Chair of Faculty Development, Dr. Nicholas Jouriles and our program director Dr. Michael Beeson, one of the most honored program directors in the country, who worked to re-develop an outstanding program.

In addition to our first Medical Education Fellow graduate, Dr. J. Chika Morah, who was recently appointed our new associate program director, two new research directors are joining faculty in July: USACS Innovation Fellow graduate Dr. Jonathan Oskvarek, and Dr. Vishnu Mudrakola.
