Life in the Empire State
To describe Albany in a few words is no easy feat, though the phrase “universal appeal” comes quite close. Whether physicians want a peaceful spot to settle down or a lively location to explore, they will not be disappointed with all Albany has to offer.
“Do not let the nickname ‘Smallbany’ fool you,” Dr. De Angelis affirms. “This is a multifaceted and growing city. We have affordable neighborhoods, safe public and private schools, and activities for every interest. From nature and arts to sports and food, there are endless ways to immerse yourself in the area.”
Some of Albany’s highlights include its proximity to the Hudson and Mohawk Rivers and Adirondack and Helderberg Mountains. With access to these natural gems, outdoor recreation is abundant. The local culture is equally vibrant. There is no shortage of entertainment with attractions like The Egg, New York State Museum, and MVP Arena.
Its centralized location also makes travel convenient. New York City, Boston, and Montreal are within a four-hour drive, and direct flights are available from Albany International Airport. After a day of adventure, the restaurant and craft brewery scene will satisfy all food lovers.
“The city truly has it all—and at a lower cost,” Dr. De Angelis adds. “Beyond the tangible advantages, our sense of community is yet another draw. I have been touched by everyone’s warm and welcoming spirit. We feel like a family. I believe people are happier here, and I know I am. Ultimately, this is what makes Albany an outstanding place to call home.”
The Ellis Medicine Team
Expanding on Albany’s perks, it is time to dive into Ellis Medicine.
First up is Ellis Hospital, which serves the Albany, Saratoga, and Schenectady counties. This facility features a Heart Center, Stroke Center, and surgery programs. It boasts a modern ICU, state-of-the-art diagnostic imaging, and a sophisticated health information technology system. The ED is open 24/7 with an annual patient volume of 51,000. It is the first ED in the nation to earn the Certified Autism Center (CAC) designation.
Secondly, Ellis Medicine Medical Center of Clifton Park serves the communities of Clifton Park, Halfmoon, Mechanicville, Ballston Lake, and Stillwater. It is a newly renovated facility that delivers emergent, primary, and specialty care. The ED operates from 7:00 a.m. – 9:30 p.m., 365 days a year, and has an annual patient volume of 25,000. It features advanced medical imaging services and a full-service laboratory with a pediatric room.
“We are currently hiring emergency physicians at these sites, both of which are great choices,” Dr. De Angelis shares. “Physicians can expect a diverse patient population and mix of acuity levels. We often treat cardiovascular and psychiatric conditions, as well as sepsis. Importantly, our environment is clean, calm, and collaborative, ensuring high-quality care. We are proud to say we work here—and that is a testament to the rewarding careers we offer.”
Among our chief priorities is physician engagement. Locally, our physicians have several avenues to expand their impact. In the past, they have acted as EMS liaisons, mentored advanced practice providers (APPs), and driven protocol improvements. Plus, our location near the State Capitol is ideal for advocacy and policy work. On a national scale, we have professional development opportunities across clinical, academic, and administrative settings. The USACS Scholars Program is one of many, designed to equip future leaders.
“As a physician-owned and -led group, we have a voice in our individual and collective success,” Dr. De Angelis says. “This has helped us cultivate a supportive culture with industry-leading benefits. Not to mention, we host a variety of social events, from team meals to holiday parties. We come together to celebrate where we have been and where we are headed. This camaraderie is a key differentiator and has been influential in my journey.”
Notably, Ellis Medicine is a recent recipient of the USACS Exceptional Achievement and Site Transformation Award. This recognition reflects our physicians’ expertise and dedication to continual progress. In Dr. De Angelis’s words, we are like The Little Engine That Could. We keep moving forward, we keep getting stronger—and we hope you will join us on this exciting path forward.
